Stand Up! You're Somebody!
Young Aussie Enterprise Inc. is a faith directed interdenominational Christian organization. Established as a Public Benevolent Institution in 1990 the organisation has built a reputation for innovation and creativity. Built on an enterprise rather than a welfare model, the organization challenges young people to accept a ‘hand up’ rather than a ‘hand out’.
Statement of Principles
Young Aussie Management and staff operate under the following principles:
- We believe in the power of God to change a person’s life and their circumstances.
- We recognize that there is a positive plan and purpose for every person for their own personal growth and welfare, giving them a hope and a future.
Our motivation must be from the heart.
- In order to be helped people must experience a change in their heart attitude.
Our words and conversation should always be used to build up, not to pull down.
- We should always look for the best in people and situations.
- We should not be influenced by current trends or pressures from outside, but should identify the real needs of the people that we are dealing with and creatively address them.
- At all times we seek to contribute to the community in which we live and work, using co-operation rather than confrontation where possible.
- We seek to see the growth and prosperity of the community, for as it succeeds, so will we.
These principles have led to the development of a creative and innovative approach to building positive relationships with both marginalized young people and their families. Young Aussie has developed a unique Community Partnership approach which includes Sorell School, Sorell Council, Community Support Services, Service Clubs, business community and parents. It is a ‘local solution to a local challenge’.
An example of programs and their success include:
The Young Aussie Car Wash – operating for more than 14 years with over 3000 young people, 80% using it as a pathway out of the negative spiral of unemployment into significant careers.
Destiny School of Motion – operating from a purpose built dance studio at the Rotunda Youth and Community Centre, over 100 enthusiastic dancers strut their stuff every week from toddlers to adults.
The HARK Program ( Healthy Active Resilient Kids): This program has been recognized both locally, at a state level and nationally as a best practice model for dealing with alienated young people who do not fit the traditional school system. It is strongly supported in the partnership by Sorell School who provide both staff and resources to enable the program to operate. The curriculum is practically based and includes as its centre piece a fully equipped automotive workshop. Other activities include gardening, home maintenance, art, woodwork, cooking, dance and boat repair. Core elements of literacy, numeracy, health education and enterprise are creatively addressed through this practical approach.
